Meadowbrook Park was established as San Bernardino California's first recreational park in 1906, on a tract of about 15 acres that straddled Warm Creek.

c.1900 ^ Mary Bennett Goodcell was a San Bernardino school teacher & civic leader. Together with with Col. W. L. Vestal, she spearheaded the 1906 clean-up of "Squaw Flat" along Warm Creek, and the establishment of a city park on the site.

"Squaw Flat" referred to the marshy area along Warm Creek, that would become Meadowbrook Park. It had long been a seasonal campground for the Cahuilla people, with plentiful water, fish and small game. Stands of reeds and willow trees provided materials for baskets and shelter.

By by the turn of the twentieth century, citizens of San Bernardino were using the site as the town dump. It was also the local 'hobo jungle' and an attraction to scofflaws.

John Tortes Meyers' Cahuilla heritage came from his mother, Felicita Tortes Meyers. He grew up on the Santa Rosa Cahuilla reservation, and in Riverside, where he played baseball on the Riverside High School team.

'Jack' Meyers was active in baseball circles in San Bernardino and around the West. He would eventually head east to Dartmouth College, going on to become a widely popular Major League ballplayer, known as "Chief" Meyers.

Meyers was a National League catcher for the New York Giants and then the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played 'winter ball' in Southern California during the off-season.

At the end of his life, Jack Meyers' home in Rialto was 7.5 miles west of Meadowbrook Park.

1940's-50's ^ Institutions & businesses in the "Barrio Chino" area, south and east of Meadowbrook Park(called Barrio Chino because San Bernardino's Chinatown had once lined Third Street, along the section where the Division of Highways was located now).

"There was nothing much beyond Waterman, just open fields. There were houses on the other side of Rialto, then it got thinner and semi-rural as you headed south to Mill street. Above Rialto, the neighborhood was more compact." [ben sakoguchi]

But by the time I got there, it wasn't as much of a thoroughfare...still only paved down the middle, and got really dusty, and a truck would come and spray oil on the sides. James Gerogeou would eventually become Principal of Citrus High School in Azusa California. When his innovative program for teen-age mothers at Citrus (featured in an April 2, 1971 Life Magazine article) met with resistance from members of the school board, Georgeou argued, "We should treat the problem not as a social disease, but as a fact of life."

On the outskirts of San Bernardino, Allen street was an early main road to Redlands, with a traffic signal installed at the corner of King street. Allen was later bypassed in favor of other routes to Redlands.

King street was first known as Daley street, then as Bridge street, and by the 1940's, King street.

Mateo worked as a chauffeur and truck driver before beginning a career as a baker.

Along with his wife, Sarah, Charles Ruiz raised three children at 151 east King street, and lived there for half a century.

Charles was an auto mechanic around the time of the First World War, then an electrical apprentice at the huge Santa Fe Railroad shops (where his father-in-law, Gabriel Velarde, had worked as a sweeper).

Charles eventually became a foreman at Santa Fe, working there until his retirement.

Antonio Contreras lived at 217 east Third street for well over 60 years. He worked as a bonder, foreman and welder at Pacific Electric Railway for more than 40 years, and raised a large family of bright, energetic children. He lived to be 95.

ramon contreras - promising artist

Ramon Contreras, promising young artist, was born in Mexico and lived at 217 east Third street for most of his life. He died in 1940, at the age of 23.

Frances Ridste lived on Bryant street with her mother and siblings from the early 1920's to the early 1930's.

As Carole Landis, she became a popular Hollywood star in the 1940's.

She had appeared in over 50 films, when she ended her own life in 1948.

For most of their lives, Lucia and Manuel Ontiveros resided in the Meadowbrook neighborhood.

In 1920 they lived on King street near the Hanford Foundry, where Manuel worked as a laborer. In the 1930's, on Rialto avenue, and in 1940 had established their home at 218 north Allen.

The Ontiveros' two sons, Trinidad and Manuel, served in World War II. Trinidad (who had also worked at the foundry) was killed in action.

"rosie" - janitress, clothing store owner

Rosa Belle Williams-Smith-Pickcure-Ward came to San Bernardino from Mississippi around 1910, and lived on Bryant street for nearly 50 years.

"Rosie" was a popular and upstanding citizen, who met a violent death in her home.

Jesus G. "Chuy" Contreras was elected state commander of the Catholic War Veterans, worked at the Post Office as a mail carrier for 33 years, and promoted local music events and dances.

In 1936, Joe Fisher Jr. was accused by Ella Peden, of attacking her in Meadowbrook Park. After a short deliberation by the jury, he was convicted. Fisher had been defended in court by attorney C.T. Rimbaugh, whose practice was mainly divorce cases.

Fisher went immediately to San Quentin prison, but his final sentencing came a year later, when he was given the maximum term of 50 years. He would die within months.

In the 1940's, Louis & Carmen Bedoya lived on Mountain View ave, Allen street, and then moved around the corner to 180 east Second street, where they raised three children.

Earlier, Louis lived in his father's house on Rialto ave. The Bedoya family had resided in Meadowbrook since before 1900. Arizona was their home during the Civil War.

During daylight hours there was a show with movie cowboy Tim McCoy and Chief Iron Eyes Cody. My memory is that we watched wrestling in the evenings and the commentator was Dick Lane. We all got a kick out of the the T.V. thing. I used to watch test patterns in the the miniature screen in the morning. We were all dazzled by the mystery of it."

Robert L. Bedoya: "Our next door neighbor, Jessie Escamilla raised her only child, David, as his father died in an industrial accident when David was young.

Robert L Bedoya: "My grandpa was a woodworker and a very fine and inventive cook. He was sought after constantly to prepare beef and pork in pit barbecues. He dug the pit, filled it and fired it with orange wood; he prepared the meat with a dark, rich, mole-like sauce, enriched with aromatic spices, dark chocolate, and peanut butter. He then covered the meat with cactus fronds sealing the pit with dirt. The meat roasted for about eight hours. Then the feast began."

Henry S Hughes, remarkable musician / machinist / inventor, was a longtime resident of San Bernardino and neighboring Highland.

While he was living in Meadowbrook, at 239 east King (Daley) street, his plans were cut short.

in the 1930's and 40's, Rita Orantes de León lived with her three children on east King street. Like other long-time residents who rented, she lived at more than one address.

In 1939-40, Rita's older son Henry had steady work as a laborer at the Arrowhead Springs Hotel, a luxury resort in the foothills above San Bernardino.

Around 1956 Rita moved to Highland, a couple miles north of Meadowbrook, where she would live to be 97.

The garage at the corner of Third & Allen streets (295 n Allen st) was opened in 1922 by Wade H. Gardner, a veteran of the (1st) World War who had been gassed on the battlefield.

Wade and his wife Pearl lived in the house next to the garage. His failing health may have forced them to sell the business in 1924 (Wade died in 1929).

Leaving San Bernardino High School in search of stardom, Francis Ridste took the stage name 'Carole Landis' and worked as a band singer, with the Carl Ravazzo Orchestra at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Then, as Hollywood movie star Carole Landis, she sang in films, on the radio, and for the troops during World War II.

meadowbrook redevelopment project

May Kwock and his brother ran the Palace Meat Market on west Third street. Talk of Redevelopment had been in the air since the late 1940's, and in 1954 the Kwocks made a bold move.

May and his sons opened the Palace ('super') Market at the southern edge of Meadowbrook, near the Orange Show grounds. They staged bold promotions and ran elaborate full-page ads with plenty of loss leaders. Four of the Sakoguchi kids worked there in high school & junior college.

arrowhead springs hotel

Arrowhead springs was an oasis of hot and cold mineral-rich waters, in the foothills 7 miles north of Meadowbrook.

It had been the site of a hotel & spa (in various forms) since 1885.

By the 1930's it was a popular getaway spot for the Hollywood elite. A forest fire destroyed the main hotel structure in November 1938.

• The resort's movie-industry owners committed to rebuild. Construction of the hotel provided some badly-needed local jobs during the Great Depression (Meadowbrook resident Henry Orantes de León, 175 east King street, was part of the labor force).

• Pioneering African-American architect Paul Revere Williams designed the luxurious new building.

• A star-studded December 1939 opening was broadcast over CBS radio.

• During World War II, the facility would be temporarily taken over by the United States Navy. It served as a convalescent hospital for wounded sailors and marines until 1946.
